pennfana: (Don't Mess With Me)
1. If it's a chaptered fic, it will probably be a long time between chapter updates. I work slowly and I'm always tinkering with things; even if the whole story's already complete by the time I start posting it, I still love to tweak it here and there to make it as good as I'm capable of writing.

2. If I'm writing in the Harry Potter fandom (which is still my main one, though I'm kicking around a few ideas for stories based on the Discworld and Shannara series, and even one based on The X-Files), then a fic that isn't actually Snape-centric will probably still feature him in some way. To date, there has been only one exception to this rule.

3. First-person fic will be highly introspective.

4. A humour fic will be as silly as I can possibly make it.

5. There won't be any sex scenes—sorry! Try as I might, I can't write a sex scene that I think doesn't sound corny, silly (and not in a good way) or completely unconvincing. Ah, well; nobody's perfect!

6. There will be several allusions to my favourite books, stories, songs, poetry and movies in every fic I write. Sometimes I don't even realize I've alluded to something until I re-read the chapter before I post it.

7. There won't be a "thank you to So-And-So for beta reading this for me" note anywhere because I'm too insecure to send my work to a beta; this hasn't proven to be too much of a problem so far, probably because I'm a perfectionist, because I earned an honours degree in English literature and because I have become an accredited beta reader as well (though I'm inactive at the moment for personal reasons).

8. Almost anything I write will be very wordy. So far, there have only been two exceptions: a piece consisting of two 100-word segments and my contribution to a "Six-Word Stories" thread over at Sycophant Hex.

9. Hermione doesn't end up with Ron. I happen to think they're wrong for each other; as fine as he is, Ron's an insensitive twit who hardly ever considers anyone else's feelings, and as much as I like (and, in some ways, identify with) Hermione, she's a know-it-all who doesn't like competition. They've consistently shown throughout the series that they are terrible at resolving arguments between themselves, and if their creator hadn't plunked them into a marriage in that epilogue to Deathly Hallows, I doubt they'd have stayed married long enough to have those children of theirs.

10. The author's notes at the end of each story (or chapter, in a chaptered work) will usually be fairly extensive. I don't really expect people to read them, but it's always nice to get a review in which one of my readers has responded to something in the notes as well. =)

Unfortunately, I can't tag anyone else; the only other fanfic writer on my friends list that I know of is Lady Whitehart, who tagged me! *grin*
